Two words.

Peer. Pressure.

I (temporaraily) stopped my dad by confiscating his cigarettes and soaking them and dumping them in front of his eyes. And I painstakingly took care to embarrass him as much as possible in front of his friends if he did it in front of them. He stopped.
Then some idiot decided to give him a box of expensive cigarettes that he somehow hid from me.

So now we make him sit down with a friend whose a doctor. He went into detail about what could happen and scared him into quitting again. Only works with a friend cause he ignores us when we tell him.

I smoked for a few years (11). So did my wife. One day, I decided to quit. I chose a week when I knew I was going to be really busy (it was during vacation and I was riding my motorcycle in the desert enduro races). That way I wouldn't have time to think about it. I also, carried several packs of gum and some toothpicks. I found that if I started to crave, I just put gum or a toothpick in my mouth. I didn't even tell my wife I was quiting. She suddenly realized that everytime she lit a ciggerette, I left the room. She asked, I told her I was quitting, she quit too. That was 23 years ago. I still don't smoke.t

I quit 9 weeks age tomorrow. Don't laugh but I recently became a true Christian & took bible & soldership classes through the Salvation Army. They are very anti-smoking & I felt that in order to not feel like a hypocrite that I would have to quit smoking. This was my idea, of my own free will. I know in my heart that God has helped me because, as any smoker will tell you it's HARD TO QUIT & I always failed in the past. My short answer is through the unmeritable grace of God & the support of friends.

Decide to stop, then stop. Period.
Don't buy another pack. Get rid of the ashtrays, the matches, the lighters. Don't let others smoke around you. Don't be around others while they smoke.

Most people want to "try" to stop, which is another way of saying, I am not going to stop. "I'll try" is not definitive or committal for this decision.

I quit cold turkey. Had a reason-baby with a respiratory problem and no money.

Second time-heart attack. Like the Doc said-if you don't quit, I'll see you sooner than later.
