Why would you cheat yourself out of a good read? The books are usually 10 times better than the movies for the simple fact that when the create a script they always leave out details because they have no way of putting it in the movie. Usually the details aren't even minor and would help people really understand a lot about the main character.
Another very good reason you should read the book is because it sounds as if you have to do this for an assignment. As I mentioned above the details are usually eliminated from the films and if you have to write a report or take a quiz based on the book, you will fail if you just watch the movie.
so read the book and later check out the movie if you have to but in most cases you will be disappointed at the book to film adaption.

This depends on why you are supposed to read a book. In general, it is better to read the book before watching the film. Not everything in a book translates to film, which usually means adapting the story. Also not every story can be told in a movie length time and often producers prefer to use their own endings. If paid enough, most authors won't argue! But for readers, it seems like a cheat. Also in a book, the details of a person's earlier life may be important but in the film this is often reduced to a few flashbacks or ignored altogether. A good example is Stephen King's "The Shining" where the Jack Nicholson character is portrayed as evil. Yet in the book, he has had a really traumatic life which, while not condoning it, does explain his current behaviour, and evokes a small amount of sympathy for this character. I might add that my husband is not a reader and I drive him mad when we see a film as I can't resist pointing out all the ways in which the film differs from the book!!!!!!!! To sum up, IMO always read the book and let your own imagination run riot. Cheers.

No, you should read the book because alot of the time, movies are based on more then 1 book and have different details that you wont find in a book.. and if your teacher read the book and you watched the movie instead and the movie was different than the book then you'll be in trouble... Good Luck!

You will be better off if you read the book. Often times they have to cut out stuff in order to make the movie or they change the way something happens in order to make it work in the movie world.
I'm guessing you are asking because you will have some kind of test on the book. If you have to answer basic questions about the characters, the plot, etc., you can probably get by just watching the movie. BUT, if you are going to have to answer specific questions about how things happened in the story, you probably should read it.
Good luck!

Nope. I'd do both if I were you. The movie is never the same as the book. It could be better or worse, but it's always different. Don't just go by the movie especially if this is for some kind of project or assignment.

Read the book. In cases like this, always assume the teacher has read the book, too. They will be able to tell if you just watched the movie and will mark you down for it.

Read the book. Most movies usually veer away from the original material, especially when it comes the endings. Movies also skip over meaningful details in favor of capturing the gist of the story. The Scarlett Letter is a great example of this.

Read the book, I fell for this trap a long time ago. The producer of the movie always puts their own twist on the story line. Your professor will notice in a nano-second that you are reviewing the movie, not the book. If that happens you will be lucky to get a "C-".

the book would be better to get the whole experience of the novel
1/3 of the High school graduates never read another book after they graduate High School.
Movies are OK but you don't really get to know the characters like you read in a book..Stephen King novels tell a lot more then Stephen King movies..

Depends on the book and movie. Some are well done such as the 1996 version of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth others such as Memoirs of a Geisha were horribly done. I say read the book it lets you use your imagination to see the story and characters vs some director's interpretation.
