Was going through my closet and my God, nothing's made here in the good ol' U.S of A anymore (with the exception of my wedding dress and a couple of things from Victoria's Secret). And I'm not talking about Walmart either. For instance, the skirt I'm wearing is from American Eagle Outfitters and is made in Malaysia-sandals Bangladesh(?). Here are some of the other countries-Veitnam (north or south?) Korea (ditto) Macau (where is that?), Indonesia, El Salvadore, Cambodia, Mexico, Thailand, the Philipines, Mongolia?,Hong Kong, China (of course)....

I think you have got pretty good answers above as to why cloths and other consumer items are increasingly being made outside U.S. In simple words, the first reason is that it is the profit margin that matters to the businessmen in U.S.

The 2nd reason is trouble in handling unionized workers and stringent manufacturing rules of the U.S.

The 3rd is that all the 'dirty' jobs are now sent outside U.S. for environmental protection reason. This may not sound palatable but look at the menial / labor intensive jobs those are now being shifted to 3rd world countries where environmental regulations are either non-existent or enforced loosely.

Btw, I had a chance to visit Gold Coast, Brisbane, Australia back in February 1996. While coming back, I wanted to buy some souvenirs. Almost all the gift-items in the departmental stores were marked as Made-in-China. I was looking for made-in-Australia and the only items I could find was Key-rings those were also available at the Airport duty-free shops. So, better don't complain and enjoy the price and corresponding quality of the items those you are importing now.

Hope this help explain the dilemma.

The reason why so many brands make their clothes outside the U.S. is because it is cheaper oversees, so they don't have to spend so many money making their clothes.

For example Sean Combs( P. Diddy clothes) are made in Central America, they had a sweatshop in Honduras, and the women that worked making the clothes complained that they were being abuse, because they work more than 8 hours a day, in a small room with no ventilation with more than 30 women and they didn't even have the right to go to the bathroom. Even Kathie Lee Gifford got into trouble back in the 90's for the same thing.

So all the famous brands preffer to make their clothes in poor countries, because they don't pay as much as they would to make it here in the U.S., but unfortunately a lot of the workers are being abused in the process.

I'm sure there are, but it's VERY rare. The US has exported most if not all of it's manufacturing textile industry to cheaper and and more cost-effective countries. I can tell you one thing for sure is that we import more clothing than we export.

If you buy any product in the US, be prepared to pay the additional costs of paying for the average US laborer which is much more expensive than say some chinese laborer or even better an african laborer.

I do textiles and things like that, but i prefer to buy things because, the effort that i would put into making it is likely to not pay off for the time and effort that goes into making things like that. Esspecially as the fashion changes, which i wouldnt be able to follow personally to make things, or that i want to keep up with it, which might mean buying things and only wearing them for a little while. But i think its cool for you to make yours :)

a lot of top designers dont manufacture in the us anymore either. my paul smith sandals (180 dollars) are made in china, my chistopher fischer sweater (180 dollars) was made in china, and my john hardy bracelet (275 dollar) was made in indonesia. price and quality doesnt have to do with american manufacturing anymore. you can have high quality made overseas.
