Both "nervous and mental" breakdowns are the result of one factor, Stress. We all have experienced it in one form or another. For kids in school it maybe finals week, in the working world it could be a combination of very long working hours and deadlines. The breakdowns are the result of too much input/stimulus to our brain and emotions. At one point we can no longer accept the input and we "Breakdown" and shutdown.

One of the first things I learned when I went to psychology classes in college was there there is no such thing as a nervous breakdown. A person may get worn down emotionally or burned out and need a break and some will call that a breakdown. There however, is no such thing as a nervous breakdown.

An inability to deal with the situation that you're in at the moment. Last Oct I had to enter the hospital because it was becoming more and more difficult for me to deal with my responsibilities and to take care of my self. When my sister had a "break down" she totally lost touch with the reality as we knew it. She was talking to my brother who'd died 5 years before, she was talking to the Pope and saying that they were sitting on her bed and she wanted to the hospital because she said that she was pregnant, She wasn't and she was only 13 and very protected because she was developmentally delayed. That's when we realized that her reality and ours were no longer the same. She had to stay in the hospital for two years before she was well enough to live back at home, It took me about 3 weeks and a change of meds before I was ready to deal with what I had to with out making the situation worse.
