WOW you put 10 quarts of oil into your engine really!? JEEZ. Ok number one too much oil creates too much oil pressure. Too much oil pressure means a possibility but in your case a guaranteed chance for it to push past the bearings and seals and you needing to rebuild/replace the seals/bearings. If it is still smoking and its blue, you are burning oil, thats bad bad. If it is white you have water, cracked block. You check your oil with the engine COLD. Not hot, when it is hot the oil is in the engine on the lifters the arms/studs. When its cold its in the oil pan where it takes the reading on the stick. Oil pressure when you first start up your car is when the oil is cold and is just coming from the pan.

First off, 10 quarts of oil in your engine is a big mistake. That's way too much oil inside your engine at one time. Have a professional look at the car and tell you what is wrong. Best wishes!!!

If you had that much oil in the pan, then the oil was hitting the crankshaft and getting aerated. The oil will get air in it and then you can loose pressure. Drain out all the old oil and fill up with the correct amount. That way you know its right.

One you have too much oil in the car so there is no room for circulation the clicking sound at start up (before you added) is normal until oil pressure is built up

10 quarts? I wouldn't be surprised if you have oil laying on the ground, under the vehicle? You could be losing pressure and oil to a blown seal or gasket, somewhere.

could be a cracked block. you may have been getting water in with you oil, making it seem like you were gaining oil, but really, it was hurting it, not being pulled to the top to lubricate rockers, causing the ticking, and being thinner, probably finding any leaks that were anxious to become a problem.

Worn out oil pump/sticking pressure relief valve or worn crankshaft and/or bearings.
It would certainly help to know what kind of vehicle you are talking about... or do you think that they all are created equal? Hope not.
