No, you don't HAVE to see a gynecologist, but once you start getting your period, you should see one yearly and have a regular exam to make sure that everything is ok.. It's like having a physical, but just for chicks.

If a medical problem is suspected such as with your period such as with endometriosis yes you need to see a gynecologist for your check ups.
Before I started having medical problems in the female area my primary care physician always took care of my pap smears and pelvic exams.
After I started to see the gynecologist for those problems she let me know that she wanted to do the pap smears herself so that she could keep a close eye on my problems. My primary care physician (as do most primary care physicians) appreciated that they didn't have to do it for me now because of my medical problems.
If there are no medical problems in the female area the primary care physician can do it if they are comfortable with it (some aren't and still prefer that the annual pelvic exam and pap smear be left to a gyn, my mom has a primary care physician like this).
