You would do far better building a wet/dry system rather than a canister. Usually canisters must seal water tight and that can be a pain to achieve as well as expensive enough to cost more than just buying a canister filter in the first place. Try a google on DIY wet / dry systems and you'll get a huge number of hits that show a wide variety of methods of building them.

i would agree that a wet/dry is a better choice, if you are planning a fish only. as for DIY plans look around on
