Im moving into a dorm and I needed a small aquarium. The one i have has a bio-wheel (no idea what it means) and has a three stage filtration. Ive read some questions and it seems most people would recommend one betta fish for such an aquarium. On the box it shows tiny fish (probably 1/3 of an inch, i think they are tetras?) and theres like 20 of them in the aquarium! im not looking to flood it with that many, but what type of fish would you recommend to put in? I want at least 4 fishes, but i dont want a fish that would overpopulate my aquarium. Im looking for generally small fishes that wouldnt be stressed out in a 2 gallon aquarium.

You can easily keep a small group of 4-5 neons tetras in the tank, but it will require you to be diligent with changing at least 25% of the water each and every week, with 40-50% being even better. Instead of neons you could choose the same number of glowlight tetras, but pick only one or the other.

If you have them in your area you could instead select a pair of Sparkling gourami or Croaking gourami.

Another choice would be a pair or trio of small killifish such as A. australe.

Lots of choices even for a very small tank provided you keep up with the maintenance and are careful not to over feed.

A Betta and other animals (not fish), would be the only thing that could work. Even Neon Tetras wouldn't work because they need to be kept in small schools. Dwarf Frogs are rather messy so either some Glass Shrimp or some Snails (real snails, not the kind they give you for free if you find them on plants at the pet store) like Inca Snails. With a Betta, you could probably keep 5 shrimp or 5 snails, or mix and match. Make sure the tank is covered, Bettas can jump reasonably well and the snails could just crawl out (they aren't very smart, they don't know they will die if they end up on your floor). If you could, a 10 gallon tank would give you many more options fish wise. It really would look better if you had the space, maybe a counter top? Your really are limited to a Betta because of the small tank (even Bettas are happier in larger tanks).

Just read somebody's response, don't get gupies, they need more swimming space than you can provide with a 2 gallon tank. Also, if you get a clump of Java Moss, and un-bunch it, you can just drop that in and it will stick to your gravel. The Betta and other animals will really appreciate it.

the only reasonable and humane thing you would be able to fit in a tank that size is a betta and some shrimp or snails. dwarf gourami's, although tiny still need at least 10 gallons for a pair in order to live healthy. bettas are absolutely amazing fish. if you have the time and patience, visit www.aquabid.com and look at the amazing bettas they have there. they are relatively cheap considering they are being shipped from half way across the world. if you were to get a betta, shrimp and snails are always an option, if the betta would allow it. it all depends on his personality. just watchout for the shrimp, i caught one chewing on my bettas tail(which is full of protein). most bettas will not allow a shrimp to do that, but mines a wuss. a bio-wheel has three-stage filtration: mechanical (the wheel), chemical (carbon is placed into the filter to remove impurities and medicines), and biological(the wheel provides a place for beneficial bacteria to grow.

I'd reccommend a betta with a few African Dwarf frogs. They get along well and are both relatively easy to maintain. Neons would also be great for such a small tank. Most other small species (tetras included) will grow to a decent size that cannot be accomidated by a 2 gallon.
