I would contact your local domestic violence women's shelter. They often need volunteers and offer trainings. You may want to contact a local community college as well. They may have social work or pre-social work classes you could enroll in. The professors may able to help you network as well.

Most hot lines will train you the way that they want, They usually want you to have some kind of experience in the matter that you'll be dealing with. If you 're in college take some courses in psychology but don't make the mistake of trying to figure out why the person is in the situation that they are, you're not a therapist and trying to analyzes them may put them off from receiving the help that they need. When people call a hot line they want some one to sympathize with them or to empathize with them, they may be looking for information as to where to go so that they can get out of the situation, THAT doesn't mean that they are ready to leave at that exact minute. People can call a hot line several times before they have the courage to leave the abuser. It will be hard, not to wonder how someone one could stay in that situation when they are being hurt. You have to remember that they are afraid, worried and not sure of them selves. One of the most dangerous times in and abusive relationship is when the person being abused leaves, that is the time when they are most likely to be killed. I hope that if you decide to do this that you think about it seriously. It will be very difficult to deal with some of the things that you'll be hearing and having to deal with. You also have to know that what ever is told to you can't be said to anyone else especially if you end up knowing someone who calls you. It can be very emotionally fulfilling, it can be very emotionally draining. But it may also be one of the best things that you'll do with your life.

I don't know where you live, but many places have a hot line and they have people who answer calls. I would try that. Good luck!
