Thats a great, and very common question among pet owners. Unfortunatly, it is not one with a commonly accepted answer.

Antarctica23 is wrong. Although dogs have developed a "pack mentality", there is no proof that such social behaviours are indicative of any improved intelligence.

More common than not, any ideas of the animals intelligence is determined by the owner based on "intelligent" acts that they see their animals do on a daily basis (regardless of the acts actual intent).

For example... I consider cats to be smarter... mostly because they are far more hygenic than dogs. A dog will vomit, piss, or defacate, then immediatly eat or lie in the mess they made. Whereas my cat uses the bathroom, and cleans itself regulary. While my reaction is to view such actions as "intelligent", they are more likely born out of instinct than anything else.

Antarctica23 is wrong again by citing the MSN article, as it doesn't conclusively state cats or dogs as being more intelligent (as there are hundreds of different breeds withen each genus... making an accurate or reasonable conclusion impossible).

The honest to god truth, is that each person will decide which they think is smarter based on personal prefrence. I think dogs are one of the dumbest creatures on the planet. It has the inability to operate on any high social level (a dog will trust anyone and anything)... and its low level of either health or hygene consciousness... Dogs also lack precise memory... and the ability to "be curious" about things in their environment... but again... thats all personal prefrence

they have the same level of intelligence. The reason you may see one as smarter than the other is because you are a cat person. A dog person would say different.

Scientists ran a organization of exams to examine this. They observed that cats perceived to preserve matters greater and have been competent to determine matters out. They had a room with meals hung from the ceiling out of succeed in. The puppies persisted to leap, looking to get the meals. When they placed the cats into the room, they observed that the cats manuevered one of the most bins within the room to beneath the meals in order that they would succeed in the meals. In one more experiment the meals used to be at the back of a wall, the animals needed to cross by way of a specific set of motions to get the meals. Both puppies and cats have been knowledgeable learn how to get the meals. Then they have been taken out of the room for approximately an afternoon. When they have been placed again within the room, the cats remembered the motions to get the meals, the puppies needed to be retrained. I believe the experiment confirmed that the cats have been competent to determine matters out and bear in mind greater due to the fact they had to be due to the fact they're a extra independant animal. Whereas the puppy is quite often side of of %, so it depends upon its % buddies to aid it. Which, while a puppy turns into a member of a loved ones, we come to be its % mate(s). While the cat stays independant even if this is a puppy. I do not believe the exams fairly confirmed whether or not one is extra shrewd than the opposite.

There is really no proof either way in that argument. I believe they are pretty comparable in their smartness. The truth of the matter is the dog is just willing to do anything for somebody it trusts a cat is not.
