Color makes no difference, your better off judging personality and spunk, so spend a little while in the company of the fert wherever you get it. Make sure it looks healthy and is not a biter. Although you can train them not to bite, it's better left to someone who's dealt with that kind of ferret before. You don't want a bad experience your first time out.
As far as gender goes, it neve mattered to me.
The biggest difference seems to be the size and weight. I have two females both around 1 1/2 - 2 pounds and two males, both over 3 pounds.
I have one male and one female who are calm, quiet, loving, sweet and very cautious and two of each who are little hellions at time, rip roaring through their room, tearing things up, fighting, fearlessly jumping off or into anything.
I adopted them from shelters and love them all.
Please make sure you get educated on the needs of ferrets, especially medical needs. Ferrets can run up quite the vet bill. I paid $800.00 to have an obstruction removed from my oldest female a while back. Ferrets are prone to lots of different problems and it's not only hard to find a vet who is ferret-knowledgeable, it's also expensive.
Good luck with your fuzzy. Contact me if you need more advice, read Ferrets For Dummies and join a Ferret group online or in your area.

Color doesn't make a difference as far as pet quality. It is all a matter of personal preference.
As far as sex, males are bigger but tend to have a stronger odor, even if descented. Females must be spayed. When they come into heat if they do not get bred, they will become sick and will die if they aren't taken to a vet and given a shot to make them go out of heat.
They both make great pets, but please do your research first. If you buy a baby, be prepared to get bit a few times, as they play very rough.

just go for the colour that you like, these guys can be pretty cool, i have only seen them in petshops so not sure what they are like to have as pets, you can train them i believe to do a few tricks and even walk them on leads, a female would probably be the better choice as the male may get aggressive trying to be the dominent one

Color makes no difference and so long as the ferret is altered neither does gender.
