Get rid of common rooms. Everybody gets a small individual cell. No TV. You barely need any guards on the inmates in their cells, the rest can be guarding people in one large communal room where all inmates get to spend three hours every day. Then back to the cells. You could house twice as many prisoners in the same space. And they'll all be much safer in individual cells.

Also, get rid of mandatory minimum sentences.

Very simple solution:

We build large prisons in Iraq on the Iranian border. This way the prisons act as a look out for Iranians smuggling weapons into Iraq as well. All prisoners wear orange jump suits so I doubt they would want to get out. Only those with 3 year or longer sentences go there so we can absorb the airline flight costs. Iraqi's work cheap - far cheaper then our unionized guards that want too much money. So they can guard them. Think about it:

Save us a ton of money
Literally thousands of miles of desert on the Iranian border - practically unlimited housing power.

Sell the prison system to Blackwater on a no-bid contract. Allow their overpaid goons to get their jollies by torturing, and even killing prisoners. Charge the prisoners families huge amounts of money to house them driving the families into poverty thus encouraging more crime and prisonsers. Have the prisoners perform unpaid labor for corporations who buy naming rights and paint their logos on the prison walls. Build arenas next to the prisons where citizens can pay to watch nearly-starved prisoners fight each other to the death for a baloney sandwich. Sell white citizens the right to drag a prisoner of color behind their pick up truck until he is dead.

These are just a few ideas to both increase prison profitability and maximize their entertainment potential.

1. Make a network of LABOR camps somewhere in Alaska and Northern states. The most effective way to control prisons and reduce tax burden.
