Great movie, as a first note. As for Vince Papoli , He did an unbelivable feat by literally being a walk on to an NFL team with no college experience, in his 30's, and being fairly productive. One of the reasons he didnt last so long was that he was in his 30's, and without playing football for nearly 15 years, the grind and punishment the NFL dishes out its pretty intense for an old guy. Secondly, he was good to make and help out the team, but most guys in the NFL have been playing football their whole lives and have twice the skill, endurance, and experience that Vince did. I would assume after 3 years of punishment, getting near his 40's and already having plenty of money and fulfilling his dream of playing with his favorite team, he decided to call it quits .
As for open tryouts in any other teams, most likely there have been numerous tryouts before the NFL merger in 1970 when a lot of people had talent to just "walk on". But now-a-days with people literally devoting their lives to play football, players becoming so much stronger, faster, and smarter than any other period in pro football, its virtually impossible to try out and compete with these guys having all the experience a walk-on doesnt have.
I'm sure Vince was happy only playing for 3 seasons. He's done what many of can only dream about and that's playing pro football. Even if it was just for one game under those lights, im sure it would have still made his world.

Most teams scout the Arena and Player Development leagues (NFL Europe), or check out semi-pro leagues with dominant players. If you want to play and get noticed, start there.

A shoulder injury ended his career in 1979. Vermeil made the unheard-of decision to hold open tryouts. Teams don't hold tryouts like that today, they possibly could. It will probably happen again.

He played for 3 years because he was already in his 30's and he had enough money to settle down.
