Clinton's achievements were unfortunately tainted by his affair with a young White House intern, Monica Lewinsky, and by his lying about it. The incident was exploited by a Republican Congress in an attempt to discredit Clinton and everyone connected with him. Looks like it worked.

Yeah, that is a very good question. I'm glad you asked it. The simple fact is that gore blew it. It should have been a cake walk. Unemployment was down, in fact crime was down, the economy seemed to be chugging along, If the truth was to be known, (which it never will) there were a whole lot of deep pocket democrats in Wa$hington that did not want gore in office.
Let's remember that he had some pretty strange ideas.
How are you capture the union vote when you call the internal combustion engine one of the worst ideas to ever come down the pike? Let's not forget his "BTU" tax. British Thermal Unit tax. t That was the one where you were supposed to be federally taxed for how much heat you used in the winter, and also how much air conditioning you used in the summer.
jimmy carter tried some crap like that by saying the old folks could just put on another sweater. So much for his second term. If you remember he didn't have a whole lot of support on the stump during the campaign. Where was everybody?
When he was out pandering for votes, how many Wa$hington big wigs were out there with him? Damn few if any. He was a sacrificial lamb, because the money people knew that the economy was about to crash, and it was better to blame a republican, than have one of their own to face up to it.
I could go on about all that silliness about how he was robbed in Florida, but those votes were counted six times the last I heard and he still lost. What bothers me the most about that mess, is that the TeeVee news loves to perpetuate the myth that the President is elected by popular vote. That has never been true. But we know who's side TeeVee news is always on now don't we.

To answer a couple of answers; 1,000,000 popular votes is not a landslide and our election is actually 50 elections. Bush won the states that counted and Gore didn't(including his own). There is no evidence that anybody was scared away from the polls by the republicans. However, the dems tried real hard in Florida to challenge the military voters that ran 80% for Bush. It didn't work. Gore ran a bad campaign with many flaws (remember the orange make up) and weaknesses.

Gore, much like Bush 41(in his second run), won the popular vote-which is what a lot of people would like to see us convert to as oppose to the electoral college. However, with out the electoral system we use, all anyone would need is the states of Ca., NY, Flordia, Georgia, and about one or two other medium populated states and the rest of the country wouldn't matter. Bush wasn't elected president, he was appointed by the supreme court...HOWEVER...Gore was about to conced when the false news report came out that he had won, then changed about 20 mins later.

Gore won , but he would have did better had he ask Clinton to help him, he wanted to do himself. He choose old Turn Coat Joe Lieberman that'll turn on you like Pit Bull. In fact if you look at him just the face he resembles a Pit bull. He was a sorry Vice president for Gore to choose but I guess you live and learn. But , when you got a bunch of outlaws running against you it is hard to keep Diebold hands , Katherine Harris and old Jeb Bush from throwing the election. But they still lost the popular vote and to me that is what counts. Bill Clinton was a great President, you keep saying he lied, I'll tell you one thing that thing you put in office is a habitual liar. Clinton may have lied about Monica but he never lied and all these thousands of people have died.

Because liberal historians have changed history to make clinton look like the greatest man ever when he was really a scandilous president who cheated on his wife while he was the president

Because Gore sighed too loudly in one of the debates. He came off as stiff and unnatural. Basically he did not have Clinton's charisma

cconsaul is right on in his points 1 and 3. Also:
-Donna Brazile ran a weak, disorderly campaign chock full of indecision and mixed messages.
-I have little respect for President Bush, but I'll surely give him this-in the speeches and debates of 2000, he talked TO the people-simply, earnestly (it seemed) and with some respect. Gore talked AT them from some lofty place of higher knowledge up in the clouds.
-I'm personally convinced Gore fatally wounded himself at the third debate in St. Louis, when he literally stalked Bush on the stage, looming behind him and bellowing ''Dingell Bill!" "Dingell!"' over and over. Dingle, indeed. (That the Brazile staff didn't prevent this disaster when trying to cultivate Gore's new "third debate persona" is reason alone for them all to have been fired at once)
-plus, yeah, shady Florida stuff, Supreme Court, not winning his home state of Tennessee, etc...

1. Gore distanced himself from Clinton instead of accepting his help. (Probably because he did not want to accept the baggage of the scandal along with it)
2. Gore had a reputation as an individual who did not mind fabricating events to prove his point.
3. Gore is no Clinton. This is not a slur, he is simply a different individual with different strengths and weaknesses.
4. Gore did not have a brother who happened to be the Governor of Florida.
5. The Democratic party was not willing to scare minorities away from the polls like certain right wing conservative organizations were willing to do.
That oughta do it.

Clinton was not a good President. It rubbed off on Al Gore. He could not even carry his own state and the nearby states of W VA and Kentucky, both of which were liberal states.
