i have to write an essay in english. the question is:

what are harper lee and john grisham in 'a time to kill' and 'to kill a mockingbird' suggesting about the need to seek truth and live with integrity

my ideas so far are to write 1 paragraph about people of integrity in the book (tkamb) and then the 2nd paragraph about people of integrity in a time to kill. does anyone have suggestions on what i could write about for the 3rd paragraph? ooooh and do you think that this thesis is too bland/boring/doesn't get to the point? Thesis = Harper Lee and John Grisham are suggesting that people must have the courage to live and act with intergrity and seek and practice the truth.

THANKS!

I like the theme. It's not too boring or any of that. It sounds like you have a very good start. I'd make the first paragraph giving the thesis of your paper. Second paragraph dealing with tkamb, and third paragraph dealing with attk. The final paragraph should be stating how the books are similar and summarizing what you just showed in your middle paragraphs. Good luck!

Yeah, this is a simple way to get this over with and score some points with your teacher. In the third paragraph, either compare or contrast the points you made in the first two paragraphs. (Excuse my spelling but it's been awhile since I've read To Kill A Mockingbird) but Atticus Finch had one manner of displaying integrity when he stood against the townspeople to prevent the lynching of the prisoner inside (his client). The book (and movie) describe him as a gentle but strong man with deeply held convictions about right and wrong. He was an attorney (a basically egg-headed occupation on the surface) but he was also a trusted town member who was the best marksman around...a fact his kids discovered when the rabid dog ran through town and Atticus was summoned to shoot him. (Before that, they sort of viewed him as kindly, eye-glass wearing and weak). They further saw him display that same courage in his convictions when he defended his client admirably in court. (They watched from the balcony). The Grisham tale is less familiar to me, so you will have to come up with the integrity angle on your own. I've seen the movie, but again, it's been awhile. Paragraph three then should compare or contrast these approaches to roughly the same virtue. Here's the trick: choose whichever one is most obvious to you. That means, if you find them more different than alike, contrast them; if they're more similar than different, compare them. Teachers LOVE that stuff! Good luck. (And have fun with it)

Harper lee was against racism. Tom was innocnet. He was the mockingbird. When atticus said, "its a sin to kill a mokcingbird," realize that this alludes to the trial and death of tom. Yes... his name was tom? I cannot remenmber 100%. Anyway, Tom never did anything. He was innocnet. He was a mockingbird: a man with no bad intentions and no faults. He was obliged to help those in need out of the goodness of his heart, and was framed for a crime becasue of racism. There were a few in the book that realized this, and they were people such as Atticus, that guy in the end outside the courthouse that offered scout the cola (don't remember his name). When hunting for birds, we can hunt the annoying ones, or the pesky ones, but why bother killing the birds that we love for the gifts they give us, such as was tom's case. Sometimes, we kill for sport. We are carried way by it, adn do not rationalize. Anyway, I apologize. I have not read teh other book. Hop ethis helps. Or have I...? Ah, well, I don't rcall.
