Commentators have suggested, and then ruled out, nearly every U.S. state and region as the basis for Springfield. Only once, in season 11, did an episode "Behind the Laughter", describe the Simpsons as a "Northern Kentucky family". However, there are many counterexamples to contradict this statement, so it acts merely as a teaser for increasingly curious fans. Groening has said that Springfield has much in common with Portland, Oregon, the city where he grew up

after extensive research, i've concluded they live in Tennessee. there are ( i've forgotten exactly) either 22 or 24 Springfields in the US, but Tennessee is the only state with both a Springfield and a Shelbyville, the neighboring town.
