Things are still built to last but they are expensive. For eg I paid the same recently for a kitchen knife as I did for a microwave oven. I expect the knife to outlast me but the micowave to be discarded sooner rathe than later. Another eg; When my parents bought our first fridge it was a major expense whereas I recently bought one for about a day's pay. I don't expect it to last too long but if I had paid the £1000+ of a top range model which equates to the value of the 1960's luxury item then I would expect it to last.

We live in a cheap throwaway society. There are things that will last a lifetime if you want them to and are prepared to pay for them.

I already do that. Cars are cheaply made now, electronics break more, you can't keep anything for more than a year or two. I do miss when things were built to last.

No

because they aren't. we live in a total consumer society so things are made with the intention of breaking after a certain time so that we buy more and newer stuff

It seems that this is something that every generation does. That, and getting set in their ways. The older people get, the less they seem to like change.
