A word made up by someone with bad luck. It is the chance something good will happen to you. Luck is not having the upper hand and somehow coming out on top.

Luck, that elusive quality in life. Many people claims it does not exist: they say they make their own luck.
Others claim they are lucky, that things just happen to them/for them, provided by a providential universe.
What makes more sense than either of those views is: being in the right place at the right time and knowing how to take advantage of the situation.
E.g., if life throws you a lemon, make lemonade.

Luck is having a nervous breakdown at a psychiatric convention.
In my opinion, luck doesn't exist. Then again, I'm subscribe to the determinist philosophy, so I don't believe in free will, either.

Just a bunch of superstition. I believe in luck but I don't really know the definition.

Luck is beating the odds.
I don't think I really believe in lucky people, but people can 'get lucky' on occasion. In blackjack, for instance, people will make poor choices playing their hands like splitting their 10's. Sometimes it works. It isn't that they're lucky, because if they do it consistently, they will lose, they just got lucky that hand. The odds are not in their favor. Any stupid thing people do can turn out alright, but eventually it will catch up with them if they continue to do it. If you shoot yourself in the head you might 'get lucky' and come out with no permanent damage, but if you try it again odds are you won't have a favorable result. People who continually take risks and come out unscathed tend to take precautions to increase their odds of success. People who jump out of planes use parachutes, people who rock climb generally use ropes. Can the precautions fail? Of course, and that is when the odds have caught up to you. I don't believe in luck, I believe in odds.

Real luck is when preparation meets opportunity. Then you may call it luck if you wish.
