My husband switched jobs last month. At the moment we don't have health insurance. We will be getting health insurance through the company in a month. I just found out that I am pregnant today. Do most health insurance companies pay for someone that is already pregnant? What will I have to pay for during the pregnancy out of pocket. I am unsure how this all works.

Thanks

have your husband talk with his former employer about the Cobra benefits. that will cover the first few months of your pregnancy. ask the new employer what the requirements or restrictions are with the new insurance as it is pending.

Do you know the insurance company you will be switching to? I'd start by calling them and asking them for the information. If they tell you no that they won't cover you.... call your State DHS and you should be able to get Medicaid or something similar and they will cover you from the date of your 1st Doctor's apt.

I hope you get coverage cause Pregnancy is EXPENSIVE! You will have to pay for 1 Doctor visit a mth. for the first 6mths, an ultrasound around 18 weeks, then 2 Doctor visits a mth until your 8mths, then 1 a week until you are admitted at the hospital. Which once your there a normal birth can cost around 2500 and a C-Section around 5000 plus additional costs for each night you stay in the hospital.

this happened to me not once but twice!! the first time the insurance company considered it pre-exisisting so we had to pay out of pocket! ouch!!! we did sign up for low-income help through the hospital which helped with some of the expences.
with my currant pregnancy I found out I was pregnant and my husband was layed off the following week.. I applied for medicad at the local social services and was approved since I was pregnant, my husbnad has since got his job back and throught the new company pregnancy is not pre-exisisting.
so either way I'm covered.
as for you if you've only taken a home test and you think your about 4-5 weeks you can wait SAFELY until his new job covers you before you go to your Ob/gyn for prenatal care..most ob/gyn's don't care to see you until your around 12 weeks anyway since the chance you'll misscarry drops then.
if you have already went to a doctor you can call the new company and ask if pregnancy is considerd pre-exsisting if it is then seriously get all the help you can from local resources health dept. and social services..congrats and good luck

It is possible that the insurance you will be obtaining will not cover the pregnancy as it is a preexisting condition. The insurance may cover the infant but not the delivery expenses.
If it is true that you will not have coverage, you may wish to contact the hospital you will be using. The hospital will be able to offer you a cash discount if you can make payment before the birth. Such discounts can be up to 40% of the stated charges.

If you have not gone to a doctor for an exam or pregnancy test DON'T until your new insurance begins. If you have already been unless your policy is one without a pre-existing clause they probably won't cover the pregnancy. Good luck!

most insurances consider pregnancy a pre existing condition and wont cover it.
