They don't need one. Sounds needs a medium because it's esentially the vibration of particles, but electromagnetic waves are carried by particles called photons, and it's like throwing a ball through space - nothing needs to carry it.

In my Fractal Foam Model of Universes, light is a transverse wave propagating thru the ether foam, which is a scaled down version of the cosmic foam.

- They travel in the form of a transverse wave, without the need of particles.
- One field induces the other field to propagate the motion.

See Maxwell equations, magnetic field induces the electric field and vice versa in a repeating fashion.

As far as I know, the electric and magnetic fields of the electromagnetic waves support one another. More at the source.

Space is the medium but its characteristics are hard to define. One of them is that it presents zero resistance to the propagation of electromagnetic waves.....Another is that it seems to have a reverse buoyancy property, that is, all objects of mass in space float freely without sinking to any specific location. Space does not allow itself to be a reference medium to measure anything....These are my thoughts and I don't think there a way to prove them right or wrong.....space is the home of all things possible and impossible.
