Yes, it can also cause nausea due to toxins being released in the body.
Give it a few days to go away. If it does not go away, or gets worse- there is something going on that needs to be looked at.

NO - you should NOT have severe pain after a massage. The most you should feel is some muscle soreness - that's all.
If you went for a massage to help a specific complaint, and experienced severe pain afterwards, then the massage aggravated your complaint instead of helping - it did damage.
Do not be fooled into thinking it has to hurt to do good - that's simply not true.
If you just went for a general massage, and experienced severe pain afterwards, then the massage was too heavy handed and again did damage, not good.
Severe pain should NEVER be felt as a result of a proper massage.

Sounds like you had some deep tissue work.
Any massage therapist worth the $60-$90 you paid, should have given you a complementary cold pack after your first visit with instruction for use and location, as to avoid or at least decrease, post-massage soreness.
Remember, massage is a technique of "controlled inflammation" especially any deep tissue method. Some level of any inflammatory response is predictable. A good quality cold-pack (not ice pack) to the affected areas for 15 mins (maybe 3-4 sessions) at a time throughout the first 24 hours after the massage, will reduce the likelihood of the pain you are experiencing. If not initiated within the first 24 hours post-massage, cold packing is of little use of preventing soreness, but may be effective at reducing the soreness.
BTW: There is no peer-reviewed literature validating the suggestion that one should drink plenty of water after a massage to reduce post-massage soreness.

I am not an expert in massage but my answer would be negative. Honestly, all the good massages I got never caused severe pain the next day. Since you are using severe as an adjective, I imagine your pain to be unusual. As Far As I am concerned, that's not good. Massages can drain you, all you want to do is sleep, can cause some pain as if you exercised and your muscles are sore. But severe pain sounds atypical. Drink lots of water in case the pain is related to your body flushing all toxins...(many toxins in this case).... feel well soon

No you shouldn't suffer severe pain the day after a treatment. You should contact the therapist and speak with them about your symptoms. The day after a treatment you should still feel relaxed and maybe have some slight aches. Did you drink plenty of water after the massage and throughout the evening?

It can cause discomfort and some pain, however, severe pain...... different matter completely.
What type of pain? Where is the pain? Was the pain there prior to treatment? Where was the massage?
Would be a good plan to see your doctor if the pain is severe.

Yes, especially if you have not had a massage before. Take a bath with epsom and/or sea salt, drink lots of water, stretch out the muscles very lightly and get plenty of rest. Massages release stored up toxins into the blood. Once these are flushed out, you should feel much better than before the massage occured.

Yes it gets all of the toxins out of your muscles drink plenty of water they should have told you that when you went in. Massage is something that takes a few days to get the benefit of. It is worth it but it's not like they show you on tv it is usually a little painful while you are getting the massage. There are two types of massage it sounds like you had a deep tissue massage... best of luck and drink lots of water in a few days that bruise feeling will go away

a deep tissue massage is supposed to make you a little sore for 24-48 hours after your massage. you should not have bruises. ice the areas that are in pain--it will make it feel better. after the 24-48 day period you should feel like your muscles have loosened up considerably. when you are in the massage your massage therapist should communicate with you as he/she massages to make sure that they are not crossing your level of pain tolerance.
but it is definatly normal to be very sore after a good deep tissue massage but like i said --no bruises and pain should go away after 24-48 hours.
