It was adopted in the 70's The new numbering system would provide an easy way of not only telling the players apart during play, but being able to do so by position. The change also assisted referees in assessing penalties

It has to do with the referees and for the commentators and such. It doesnt make sense, but thats the way it is. It doesn't seem to be a problem for the refs in college or high school. In college you have players wearing number 2 at linebacker, and number 8 at wide reciever, and it seems to be alright. Same as highschool ball. Just recently they changed it so that recievers can wear numbers 10-19. Before they could only wear 80-89. Thats why you see people like Larry Fitzgerald wearing 11 and Braylon Edwards wearing 17. However, Keyshawn Johnson was wearing 19 before the rule came out, so i dont know if he got fined for it or what. Reggie Bush tried to wear 5 as a running back, and the NFL wouldnt let him, therefore he decided to wear 25. Thats one thing the NFL is ignorant about, the uniforms.

To aid spectators and referees. Personally, I think it kind of stinks. I think a player should be able to choose any number from 1 to 99, no matter which position.
1-9 QB, P, K
10-19 QB, P, K, WR
20-29 RB, DB
30-39 RB, DB
40-49 RB, DB, TE
50-59 OL, LB
60-69 OL, DL
70-79 OL, DL
80-89 WR, TE
90-99 DL, LB

I think it is to help referees determine penalties. If someone with the number in the sixties or seventies from the offense catches a pass, it is clearly an illegal pass.

now that is the NFL's only fault, not being more leinent w/ the uni's, like when jake plummer wanted to honor pat tillman and he couldn't, that was crap, i mean in baseball for jackie robinson's aniversary how everybody was wearing his #, that was fabulous, very classy, that is one area where the NFL can learn a lesson from the majors, but that is the only lesson they can learn from the MLB at all
