Aid is not a successful policy. If you send food to a country where people see their lifes as being at threat from the competition of food scarcity then once these people are well fed via Aid their will be a tendancy for an increased birth rate. This is because where people do not feel that the future of their children is secure then they'll usually have 5+ children to try and make up for the chance of some of their children dying. Before Aid, these peoples generally did not have as successful a birth rate as they would with Aid because the female body requires a basic amount of fat reserves before her biology will let her become pregnant and her chances of miscarriage become greater if she can not maintain a certain level of health. In the end Aid creates a residual population boom, which requires more Aid to feed more mouths which creates more boom. It becomes a vicious cycle. That is not to say that I do not agree with helping those in this world who need help. In fact I have my own project in semi-arid Kenya to improve the food security of the people there, but not by Aid. I'm instead teaching them how to diversify their agricultural production so that they are not as vulnerable to climatic shifts and so that they have more consistent food supplies and revenues which they produce FOR THEMSELVES! By doing this the equation of having children is not just one of food supply, but the ability to retain this new lifestyle also becomes important and seeing as children = heirs and consequently divide your land and productive capabilities in the future, it becomes more and more important for families to plan smaller families the more productive and secure in their families future that they become. All said, food Aid is a complete waste and the true solution is through ngo's and/or individuals that actually go into these countries or people from these countries that are not in place to dole out Aid, but instead to educate on how to be more productive themselves. That is what I do.

Besides supporting organizations like my own, the best thing that the government's of developed nations can do, is to eliminate agricultural subsidy's and promote true fair trade policies with developing nations. In doing so the value of food will increase worldwide by discontinuing these subsidies. Farmers from developed nations will make up their losses from no longer getting subsidies because the value of commodities will increase and then because food production is the leading economic activity of most developing nations, these increasing commodities value + the adoption of true free trade will allow this increasing productivity on their land to bring their families more income. In doing so, this does not just put food in the stomaches of everyone around the world, but it also creates employment and productivity.

Greedyness, corruption, and a mix of the two on the higher levels of limitations i.e. politicians and the rich who could easily make a difference. What WE could do as a people is ban together to make things happen. Look at Live Aid/Live 8 (I went to live 8! It was awesome!). It's been proven many a time in the past that when the common people link arms, we can do incredible things! But, we, meaning the majority of us, just choose not to. Eventually we might have no choice but to.

Too much corruption involved. The people who need the food can't get it because some bully / politician / crook is hoarding the food and trying to make more money off of it. By the time their price is met, the food goes bad and the people stay starving. The people who need the food are kept away from the monetary transactions and not told what is really going on.

Our world is, unfortunately, not focused on such goals. While some influential people do make great strides, nothing will happen until a relative great number of people actually care.

I wish I knew too:(

Some people in this country are anorexic or belumic, some people are not thin by choice, or starving by choice, be proud of yourself, and be greatful you can get food. There is also people who over eat. The extra food they eat could be helping others.
