I've got a 5 months languages scholarship in Porto, Portugal (Oct-Febr). The problem is, I don't exactly like the way Portuguese sounds (though Romanian is a Romanic language too, and I'm supposed to learn Portuguese easily), and I'm wondering...is it worth the effort? How Portuguese people, environment and likestyle are like?

I have been to Portugal twice.
It's very picturesque, especially Lisboa and the coast. Porto looks good in pictures, and I've always wanted to go there. I found the people were nice an friendly, there's good food, wine and nightlife, and beaches, hills, castles, ruins, olives, and tourists and immigrants from Brazil and Africa. It's a really varied crowd and I think I could live in Portugal, easily for 5 months, maybe for years. What you can do is learn Portuguese there, but shoot for the Brazilian accent, which is more seductive and beautiful. I spoke my broken Spanglo-Portuguese with a Brazilian accent there and they asked if I was from Brazil.
You can also take short train rides and go to Spain from Porto. Down south on the Algarve coast are some pretty beaches and some concrete-villa type places. Read up on the towns to see what's interesting to you.

Hi there, Yes it is. When I retired, I decided to leave the rain, cold and high prices in UK. I looked at many countries. Having worked abroad most of my life, I knew a lot of countries and more importantly, their cultures. I narrowed my field to just two. Bulgaria (sorry not Roumania) and Portugal. Both countries while very different, have excellent family values, low crime rates and even more importantly low cost of living and very good climate! Go to Portugal, learn the language and the culture. You will make many friends there, I did!
Where do I live now, Bulgaria of course! :)

replaced into kinda taken aback too see considered one of Neff's cons.. "you're in Europe, you're on the element of all different ecu worldwide places", Sweden is slightly distant from different ecu worldwide places (nicely, different than from Norway or Finland), each physique with a globe sees that, via that logic Netherlands, Belgium or the Czech Republic could be greater advantageous options. i'm taken aback to make sure the worldwide places you have picked, for me could be somewhat significant the climate, i do in comparison to warm days, which might rule out Spain, Portugal and Italy. Sweden is slightly too chilly and that i think of i would not cope nicely with that day/night changing time (I even did not like it in Denmark for the period of summer season and there it adjustments purely via some hours). Which leaves us with the two Belgium, Netherlands or the Czech Republic - it somewhat is the place I stay. and that i don't possibly comprehend that plenty approximately Belgium, purely that that's reported to be an exceptionally high priced usa, that may purely be actual for travelers, with interior of sight earnings that's going to not be that undesirable i assume. Netherlands i've got faith like it an exceptionally great usa with a pleasing panorama and all ecological and so.. (don't comprehend why). And my usa.. i don't hate it here, i think of we've a good humorousness, lot of interesting places to bypass to, see and that's nowhere too a techniques, because of the fact we are a small usa.. additionally the best (because of the fact of good water) and the main inexpensive beer, yet additionally kinda undesirable government it appears like being in a circus, not that different worldwide places have been given all of it found out. :)) not each physique is in a position to communicate English, so Belgium and Netherlands - earnings there. And we even have no sea.. and that i admire sea, whether that's purely to envision. :) it is your decision and we don't comprehend what you anticipate from the country you wanna stay in, so not basic to supply you good advice. :)

Portugal is a very beautiful romantic country. portugese people are very friendly. I remember in Lisbon being lost (on more than one occasion) and having someone actually go out of their way to show me where I needed to go (they actually took me there). There is something about that country that is very nice.

As for Porto. I have never been there, but have a friend there. She tells me it is lovely (of course she is bias)

Anyways I write a travel blog you may want to check out at :

happy travels!

Portugese is very similar to spanish. It might be more useful to learn spanish because it is more widely spoken (Spain + most of south americia and Mexico as opposed to only portugal and brazil).

Anyways best of luck!

It's beautiful. And I'm surprised you do not like the sound of the language. It's my favourite language... musical but soft...
