There are some birds that have been reduced to very few such that captive breeding has been the only way to save them. The nene (hawaiian goose) the takahe in New Zealand and the Lord Howe Island woodhen are three that come to mind. I did hear of one bird species that was reduced to one nest of eggs that was bred back up from there but I can't remember which it was.

Precluding some very improbable situations, a lone survivor of a species would have to be asexual to procreate, which is itself a very rare quality in animals.
