I know the two forms of government are very similar, both are based on the idea that everyone does their part and gets an equal share of the pie. I know that both are about the government controlling everything. And I know that both don't work in practice because people are lazy and won't make an effort if they have no motivation to succeed, so what are the fundamental differences between the two?

The quick and easy way to remember the difference between Socialism and Communism is: Socialism is "from each according to their ability, to each according to their DEEDS," whereas Communism is "from each according to their ability to each according to their NEEDS."

For the most part the difference begins as a matter of degree. As a society advances further into communisim a more totalitarian form of government is required. This is because fewer and fewer productive people are left to pull the wagon, and restrictions that would seem oppresive in a soft socialist country (France) now have to be instituted to keep the productive few from fleeing (Think Venezuala)

The fundamental differences between these two ideologies is that socialism encouraged democracy and they therefore do not implemented their policy based on force or violent unlike communism. Communism is mainly a dictatorship adherent, which means people who challenge or oppose their power will immediately be eliminated. However, as you have mention these two parties have one similar aim which is to uphold equality and wealth among people, but the method of enacting it is completely different.

as far as I know, communism means everybody gets an equal slice of the pie, regardless of any factor. Its meant to even things out in such a way that race, money, religion, etc don´t make any difference to anybody and everybody is entitled to exactly the same education, medical attention, etc.
Socialism works on the precept that everybody is born with the exact same rights to everything, that again medical attention, education, etc are the same for everybody. However, the government isn´t going to take your money and hand it over to anyone else. What you make of your life, starting out at the exact same point as anyone else, is yours. So it evens out factors that might have prevented you from getting as much as anyone else, but the end result is entierly up to you.

Uh, much of what you claim to know is wrong.

Socialism is an economic system; communism a political system.

If you actually want to understand them, you could try some internet searches.

Socialism was working quite well in a lot of places, untill the people who want to recreate a feudal system (where a few people own everyone else) got control.

Communism has never been tried; the countries that called themselves communist were actually state-run capitalism, which is not the same thing.

Elections, for one.

Under communism, the government owns everything and doles it out to the people.

Socialism means spreading the wealth (stealing from the workers).. :)
