What questions should I ask myself when I'm reading novels, newspaper, and other books? It is hard to be a deep critical reader. I don't want to be a shallow reader. I would like to explore the world of the writer and fully understand his intent, the message he or she wants to convery to the reader.

What questions and do you have any suggestion? I will be soon a high school junior. Can you answer my answer correctly?

1. What is the author trying to say to the reader?

2. Is the visible plot the deepest level of meaning the story has, or does it appear to be an allegory for something larger?

3. Why is the author using specific diction in a passage?

4. What tone is the author trying to convey in this passage?

5. Is the author trying to convey any specific moral or value judgements to the reader? If so, what?

It's also easier to understand what authors mean on a deeper level if you research into their lives. Knowing their background, life history, and opinions can go a long way towards trying to figure out what they're really saying.

If you read non-fiction books they are filled with facts and you can try to absorb the facts and then go back and see if you remember, this may help you pay closer attention to what you are reading and is like a direct feedback to see if you are getting it or not. Then when you move to fiction reading, you will have developed better skills at comprehension
