I think some of these people are a bit confused about the question. A lot of anger in one of them in particular.
Lets see, I presume you are proposing this question under a context such as: your car goes off the road into the river / lake / etc and your spouse and child are unconscious. You can make it to the surface with one of them but most likely the other will drown. You have to choose one and risk the other's almost certain death.
I know that I would want my wife to choose my son over me. I'm no highly trained doctor or wide-world leader, but who knows, maybe my son might be.
My wife would almost certainly agree and want me to choose the boy also.
This isn't to say that I wouldn't try to go back for her.

Honey, that's a hard one. I'd have to say my child because their whole life is ahead of them and as parents, we're getting a little "long in the tooth" so to speak. Also, if the shoe was on the other foot, I would want my child to be saved rather than myself. I think any parent would, but maybe I'm a minority.

My spouse, because I would have come to rely on them so much, and they could help me through the situation of losing a child better than the reverse... this is a very selfish answer, but whatever... its just hypothetical, fortunately.

I don't have a spouse or child so I guess I'd have only myself to safe. But if I did, I would not really know who to save. honestly!

Child, any child.
(Assuming I would still be alive to care for the child; I do assume that my life is left out of this question.)

You remind me of that Batman movie where Batman has to choose between saving his love or a bus load of children. Unfortunately you arch-villains don't get to call all the shots. He saved them both!

My spouse. Children are a "choice". Our Spouses are a gift from God.

Most women will tell your their child. Most men will tell you their spouse.
I would save my child, though, and I'm a male.
