Before anything:BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP UNLESS YOU WANT TO LOSE VALUABLE DATA: DOCUMENTS, SAVED GAMES, FAMILY PICTURES, ETC.

NOW THAT THAT'S OVER WITH . . . . . .

If it's the full upgrade, put the CD in the drive, close it,. reboot
Press the F1 or Del key.
Change your boot options to boot up fist from the CD-ROM drive, then the HDD.

Save changes and exit.

When formatting, Quick Format with NTFS.

When you're done with setting up Windows XP settings and ask you to reboot, take out the CD, let it continue on through the process, when it asks you to reinsert the CD, do so.

After the final steps are done and over with, take out the CD again, go into BIOS and change the settings back to reboot from the hard drive first, then then if you want the CD-ROM drive.
