Well, no they definately won't die. Rats will often chew on cage bars to trim their teeth down, its not actually necessary to buy wood block.

But rats are very smart animals and like to play/chew on things to keep themselves from getting to bored.

I always give my rats some paper, woodscraps... its not necessary to go to the pet store.

It is true that they need to chew on things to survive. Get a nice rat block type of food, and put in chew sticks.

The reason for this is that a rats teeth constantly grow thoughout thier life and if they don't chew on things, they won't wear them down. Instead they'll grow into their head. This is also true for Hamster and most small animals.

This is true for ALL rodents. It's also one of the reasons wild rats do so much damage. They'll gnaw on most anything including wiring. Give your pet rats some of those rawhide chew toys.

rats teeth continue to grow through their lives so they have to gnaw on things to wear the teeth down or they will force the mouth open or penetrate the brain.

All rodent's teeth grow throughout their lifetime, so they constantly need to be worn down. Or else they would become crooked, grow through their jaw, etc.
