I have an 11 year old sister who is going to a 3 week over night camp this july/august and thinks she might get her first period there. She asked me what to do, and I don't know what to tell her.

Has she showed the signs...
aka- 1) has had clear run off for about a year-six months
2) has she developed in other areas?

if so then i would definately prepare for camp... this means the fallowing.
1) If she gets her period when asleep her she could get messed up which means bring a stain remover pen or pad, teaching her how to do laundry, or just being prepared.
2) bring alot of extra pairs of of underwear.
3) by a book (like american girls guide to your body) that explians how to put in a tampon and other important things.
4) buy her thin tampons that are easier for young girls
5) thin pads (aka Always work great!)

hope she has a great summer!

Get her any "Supplies" she might need, just in case she does have her first period there. You might also want to show her how to use the supplies. But many times the camp's clinic might have some.

Here are some great fact you might tell her:
- It’s perfectly normal to have a period that lasts anywhere from 3 to 7 days.
- A woman’s first period is known as menarche, and normally occurs between the ages of 10 and 17.
- What if my period is painful?
Painful periods (also called dysmenorrhea) involve crampy, spasmodic pain in the abdomen, hips, lower back, or thighs. Women with dysmenorrhea may also experience nausea or bowel irregularities like constipation or diarrhea.3, p. 385 C For some women, painful periods subside after their first pregnancy.3, p. 385 D Talk to your health care professional about what you can do to treat painful periods.

im 13 and a half and this summer am worrying about the same thing. I just told my mom my worries andshe bought me a box of pads, and wherever i go that is away 4om her, i just bring them along in a bag. Just buy her a box of at least 18, and the first one is 99.9% of the time light, so just buy normal thickness. Also, assuming u already have ur period, and that this is a camp, teach her how to use tampons and buy her a box of lites. mi friend used tampons the 1st day of her period! I hope i helped!

If it's her first period, have you pack some pads.. I wouldn't suggest tampons since it would be her first time using them and it's a little scary. I would have her pack a tide to go pen just in case she has an "accident" and maybe a pkg. of baby type wipes just to keep herself extra clean... This may sound corny, but I wear red underwear during my time just in case I have an incident. Have her pack a few extra pairs of underwear as well....Bring Motrin it works really well. It's better to be safe than sorry.... Good luck

Tell her it is ok if she were to get it. You could pack some pads in her bag for her. I am sure she could tell some of the camp workers and they could help her out to. See what she is scared about and try to calm her fears. It is a normal thing and every women goes through it at some point in their life.

Make sure you explain what she needs to do before she leaves. Give her some supplies to take with her and explain how to use them. Tell her to call you if she is confused and has no one to talk to, but hopefully she will have made some friends at camp she can confide in.

educate her on periods. Then tell her to pack some pads or tampons just incase. Explain that it's all part of being a woman. Don't scare her.

i sympathise because i got my first period when i was on holiday hundreds of miles away from home, and it completely ruined it for me. there's not really much you can do except take pads so she's prepared - i had nothing when i started mine and it makes you feel more comfortable if you know that you can deal with it and don't have to go and ask anyone for pads. hope that helps xx

Tell her to make sure she takes pads/tampons with her just incase, maybe some pantyliners too. And throw in some tylenol too. That way she'll at least be prepared if it does happen.

Talk to her about it. Teach her how to use a pad, about changing it often etc.. Pack some pads, some extra underwear and some Pamprin or Midol.

It is always better to be prepared!
