She's 69 and is in the hospital she's not able to hold her head up and she's complaining of not having clear thoughts and that her mouth and gums are very sore. Does anyone know if this could be the beginning of the end or have any ideas to help my family and my mom get through this? The team at the hospital seem stumped. I wish her Dr. was Dr. House!

Please help!

Locate her main Doctor and demand to speak to him. They are the only ones who can answer this for you. I'm sorry for your situation. My sister was also in this shape and only the doctor can provide the info you want. Ignore the dumb comments posted. Someday they may have to face this and then they'll think back. Bless you and your family.

First, call in a Palliative Care Consult....they will work with the hospital team to go over her symptoms....if the team can do nothing and do not know what is wrong--at least PC can give her comfort care. (Palliative is simply comfort care) How you go about this is either calling your local hospice and getting a referral. Just because you are calling hospice doesn't mean you are near the end....they just have the means to refer you to this special team. Palliative has nothing to do with actual hospice care. But at least they can make her more comfortable until something is found out.

Does she have liver failure as well? Sometimes the build-up of toxins from liver failure can lead to encephalopathy, which frequently causes confusion/lack of clear thinking. Here's the definition - why I'm asking will make more sense with this definition in mind.

Good luck to you, your Mom and the rest of your family**

Doctors are the only authority in this kind of situation. I can only give you my thoughts. The sore mouth and unclear thoughts could be side effects from some psych drugs. Is she in the depressive phase of her mental illness, perhaps. I wish you luck in your search. Get more medical and psych consultations.
