It's a waste of time to feel upset. It means you give them leave to offend you. I have better things to do with my time than give importance to what anyone says.
I subscribe to Eleanor Roosevelt's motto: No one can make me feel inferior without my consent.

no this is natural, unless you don't care.
What I think you should consider is why people are like that. Is it their real selves or you are causing this. If you are not causing this, I suggest you just don't care about it that much and just stand up for yourself. They are condescending and you should stop being a sponge. Let them know that you are not the right person to be done that thing. I hope you can find ways to do this thing right. But, you have to own it first. You should know what you want and stop bad behaviour around you when you see it.
Good luck! ;-)

Hi Maggie,
I personaly hate being talked down to, especially in a condesending manner by someone who thinks they know better when infact they may not. It's not just as bad if they are being condecending but you know they are only doing it because they care, that can be more forgivable. I think we are all sensitive to being talked down to because in a way it's like being told off or shouted at and made feel inferior so it would hurt our feelings, self worth and pride to a certain extent but it's how you deal with it that is most important. You can ignore it, stand up for yourself and answer assertively, argue or simply tell the individual who is acting in this way how it made you feel in order to stop them doing it again!
Best of luck

Good question. Maybe it does indicate extreme pride if a person is particularly sensitive to people being condescending. If a person's ego wasn't involved, they wouldn't be as affected, would they? Thanks for making me think. Insightful!

Given that being condescending is rude, it makes perfect sense to be offended -- even to let the other know you're offended, as long as you do it politely.
Being upset it giving those others too much power over you.
Remember, they're the jerks, not you.

For me, pride, as it is insulting when someone condescends me. I don't want people to think I need things explained like an idiot.

This isn't really a direct answer to your question, but instead of feeling immediately defensive towards someone who is being condescending, think of how that other person must feel. They are speaking "down" to you because it makes them feel as if they are superior to you in a way.
Don't take great offense at it -- it is more their issue than yours.

I think its mostly pride as this would correspond to your choice of word......condescending.
A person experiencing upset from a sensitive angle would probably use another word to describe it.....maybe "belittle"

No one likes a put down and some people who seem to constantly critise others must live unhappy lives, they are no more than nags. They are probably jealous of you and try to make you seem so inferrior so they can feel superior.

We are all born with an innate sense of self worth and knowledge that we are meant to be here, deserve to be here and therefore deserve respect... it's that whole made in the image of God thing. So when we are attacked in anyway, our God image is potentially distorted and so it is right to be offended, but how! you respond is what preserves your identy, not what is said or how it's said!
