You will definitely want to hit the downtown area, especially Michigan Avenue as there are all kinds of stores to check out. In addition, Macy's (Marshall Field) has its flagship store on State and Randolph and it has another store on the north end of the Magnificent Mile.
As far as outlet stores go, there is always Gurnee Mills which is due north of the downtown area, Lighthouse Marketplace out in Michigan City Indiana (about an hour from downtown), and an outlet mall out in Aurora.
But Michigan Avenue and downtown Chicago is the place to get to for clothes and more!

I suppose what "Taylor" is attempting to mention is Water Tower Place. Yeah, that is wherein all the dressmaker's shops are if you are into that. The Woodfield mall is better and has extra dressmaker shops, however is placed in Schaumburg, IL approximately 25 miles from the downtown field. If you and your household are confined to the downtown field there's nonetheless a number of cool areas you'll be able to determine out.

The Magnificent Mile. Also if you are willing to drive 35miles away from the city, go to Woodfield Mall. Unfortunately, there are not outlet malls in the city, go would have to drive about 45 in to an hour west in a suburb I think is called Aurora.

I definatly agree with Michigan Ave. It's an amazing place to shop, and it rivals any district in NY or Paris. Also, do be sure to check out the other malls in the close suburbs, and you have to stop at Woodfield Mall, it's just west of the city off of I-90. It's a HUGE mall, and everyone from out of town LOVES it. Either way, have fun, and don't spend TOO much, haha.
"Surround yourself with fashion, food, and fun at Illinois' #1 tourist attraction. With the most distinctive collection of shopping, dining and entertainment, it's no wonder Chicago's visitors voted it their favorite suburban attraction in 2000."
Check out Woodfield Mall here, and check out the "Out-of-Town" section at the top:

I would not suggest the Magnificent Mile. Its way too hyped up and have regular stores that are way too expensive.
You could head to Chicago Premium Outlets in Aurora (suburb). All name brands at cheap prices. Its open air so have some sunscreen on and have lots of water.

There's Oak Brook (?) mall outside of the city. I question it only because it's been 16 years since I've been there. But hit Michigan Ave. LOTS of fun shopping of every kind.
