That is a goood one........It is because they can, and get away with it. I am sure that pharmacist, nurses, staff, and many many others would like to see this change. Allegedly its to change some(yet to be seen) for health and safety reasons.
Time will tell though........."I would not want to bet the farm on it though."

I know that some docs seemed to pride themselves on being "unique" and make their handwriting, especially their signature, swooping and not legible. I really think some of them believe it is a right of passage of some sort when the handwriting gets bad.
As said above, there are some laws passed now to make this better for all.
I work in Information Systems now, and work with making electronic medical records and best practices to make that happen.
I can say that an electronic signature is so much easier to read and actually provides safeguards to preventing medical errors. I am proud that I do something that keeps patients safe.

to provide a challenge for the world around them. Besides if you wrote 1/2 of what a doctor writes you would get a little loose with the cursive as well. What a generalization not a nice question for a nice person.

I honestly think they believe it is a status symbol and required! A law was recently passed that requires them to write more legibly though...too many RX errors.

Because they're just too busy and in too much of a hurry to write legibly.

they are writing to the pharmacy " I've got mine, now it is your turn to get yours. " but they do not want the patient to know what they wrote.
