Choosing the correct water temperature helps keep your clothes in good condition. You’ll pick one temperature to wash in and one to rinse in (though both may be the same).
Hot water is for sturdy whites, colorfast pastels, light prints and heavily soiled clothes.
Warm water is for colorfast dark or bright colors, polyester, acrylic, nylon synthetics and washable woolens. It’s great for the permanent press cycle. This temp will minimize the loss of dye in your fabrics.
Cold water may keep dyes from bleeding. It’s best for lightly soiled clothes and items in the gentle cycle. No matter what temperature you wash in, cold is the best for rinsing your clothes.

The old rule was hot water and Clorox for white cottons and warm or cool for colors, depending on the fabric. But with today's all temperature laundry detergents, you can wash about everything using warm or cold water, saving on your hot water bill.

for colors cold. I have washed whites in hot and ruined them. I think you can get them clean in warm if they have stains you should never wash them in hot. it sets the stains. even for whites. you can use bleach and cold water or warm. for colors always use cold. if you hang your tops on a hanger to dry they will look new longer. and pants too. if your tops are heavy when wet you can lay them flat to dry even if the tag says they can be dryed in a dryer it is usually best to not use the dryer.

You can just set the water temperature on the warm\warm setting, and use the appropriate detergents, bleach and fabric softeners.
My son started doing this and stopped RUINING his clothes by forgetting to change the temperatures.

I always do cold/cold. Other wise you have to seperate your colors. The warmer temps. get the clothes cleaner, though you can do more laundry, quicker if you do cold/cold.
