Do any of you have good ideas for homemade recipes, solutions or contraptions that make horsekeeping easier?

I mean this in regards to everything: tack organization, grooming, feeding, tools etc. There used to be a horse magazine that ran a monthly column like this and I was frequently amazed with the things people invented.

if you have limited space try using an old coat/hat rack ( the stand up kind that have hangers all the way around) to hang and organize your halters and bridles a diy saddle rack
http://www.hayexchange.com/articles/saddle_rack.htm
screw old plastic supplement buckets (larger ones) to the wall, keep the lids and use it to store wraps, brushes and medicines. it keeps them handy so you dont have to dig through the tack box for them and it keeps leaks isolated. plus you can even sort it by horse so you dont risk cross infection from tack sharing. a peg board and s hooks work great to store and organize bits. over the door plastic shoe oranizers are great for odds and ends we all accumulate like spare browbands, chigago screws, hole punchs, extra latigo etc. zippered comfortor bags are good for storing winter blankets, they stay clean and neat and are out of the way. lol i am a pack rat but an organized one.

Horse Things To Make

2016-12-16 07:00:20 · answer #2 · answered by livesay 4 · 0 0

1)There are a lot of web sites that have great recipes for homemade horse treats.

2) Make your own cross country jumps. For example, you can make a water jump using a blue tarp.

3)If your horse loses a shoe you can use a diaper and duck tape to cover it.

4)Old tooth brushes work great for cleaning tack, especially to scrub the bit.

5)Make your own horse shampoo: Phase A Weight %
For 236 g /8oz

Alkyl Sulfonate (cleansing agent) 70 %
165 ml / 1/2 cup 3 Tbsp

Polyglucose (cleansing agent) 22.5 %
53 ml / 3 1/2 Tbsp

Phase B
Soy Quat (protein conditioner) 4%
9.4ml / 2 tsp

PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate (emulsifier, emollient) 2%
4.7 ml / 1 tsp

Fragrance 1.5 %
3.5 ml / 1/2 - 3/4 tsp

Optional

Provitamin B5 (vitamin, soothing agent) 0.5 %
1.2 ml / 28 drops

Aloe Vera Gel 10x concentrate (moisturizier) 1 %
2.4 ml / 1/2 tsp

Method
Add phase A into the mixing vessel and stir gently. Add phase B one by one to phase A and stir again gently. Fill into 8oz shampoo bottle. The shampoo concentrate doesn't contain a preservative, if you intend to dilute the concentrate with water then we recommend to preserve it with 1.2 % phenoxyethanol/SA (2.8ml or 1/2 tsp).
Direction to use: shake well. Thoroughly wet animal's coat with water. Massage only small amounts of the shampoo into coat while adding water to get better dispersion. Continue until a generous lather is generated. Rinse well.

Properties
Easy to make, mild but rich cleansing shampoo concentrate. Contains very mild surfactants suitable for the sensitive skin. Contains also a soy-based protein conditioner and an effective emollient (peg-glyceryl cocoate) that moisturizes the pet's coat. Optionally, provitamin B5 may be added to soothe irritated skin or aloe vera to moisturize very dry skin

(recipe found on makingcosmetics.com)

All i could think of at the moment. If I come think of anymore I'll let you know.

Best wishes!

I used an over the door shoe holder for my leg wraps and bandages, a clothepin for a twitch, and I make my own shampoo:
10 oz joy regular lemon dish soap(not ultra)
4 oz glycerin
10 oz white vinegar
Combine all ingredients in a gallon jug and add water to fill rest of gallon.

The lemon scent repels bugs, the dish soap is a very mild detergent, and the glycerin takes care of dandruff flakes and provides some emollient type conditioning.

Do an allergy test on you rhorse first before washing his entire body though.

If you are just looking for horse crafts, add bling or fake flowers to your halters and saddle pads. Make a fly mask for your horses, but use fancier fabrics and maybe some bling. Be careful if you decied to make tack. Horses are big strong animals and tack like halters, bridles, saddles, ect need to be made with the correct supplies and sewing items. You could get really hurt making anything like these items with a regular sewing machine.

You can but alot of haulters, buckets, lead ropes, brushes e.t.c. from sale barns, they go pretty cheap at the end of the evening. You couldnt make them any cheaper!
As far as treats, feed, fly sprays, your better off buying a high quality product, it cheaper in the long run.
