I bought my car last year from a local dealership. When i purchased my car it was at around 35,000 miles. When I took my car in for an oil change the people informed me that my car was due for services at 30,000 miles and asked if i would like them to go ahead and perform said services. I assumed that the services had already been done as i had just bought the car. Recently i took the car back to the dealership due to a service light being on, and their mechanic tried to sell me the 30,000 mile services. My car is currently at 45,000 miles and other then the electrical problem i just had fixed it runs well. Should i get the transmission flushed, i have read where sometimes it causes larger problems, and i have also read from certain places that they are not required and are just to pad the pockets of the mechanics. I have also read about how they are vital in maintining the life of a vehicle.

I would just do it the old fashioned way by dropping the pan and changing the filter, I have heard to many horror stories about flushing the system and problems afterwords.

Read the maintenance schedule for you car. It will give you when you should service the trans. Some cars are at 15,000 miles and others are at 100,000 mile. A general rule is to do this at 30,000 miles.
Normal service is just remove the pan and change the filter and add the necessary fluid. But this only changes about 3 to 6 quarts of fluid. Most trans. have a capacity of 14 qts. The rest is in the torque converter and up inside the trans.
Flushing by qualified people is a good thing to get the most out of your cars trans.
Good maintenance gives the best service and longest life from your car.

OMG!! Absolutely NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT GET A TRANNY FLUSH!!!

My husband is a transmission technician with a degree and I myself have rebuilt a few transmissions.

There are several problems with getting a transmission flush no matter the age or mileage of your car.

A transmission flush runs clean fluid through your transmission until the dirty fluid is washed out. Sounds great, right? WRONG!

The flush pushes all the larger particles into your transmission filter, clogging it. This can over heating, aerating, etc. A tranny flush does not include a filter change after the flush. A transmission fluid change does. The transmission is drained of the fluid, the filter is replaced and the tranny is filled back up with clean fluid.

However, sometimes changing the fluid can cause more problems than good. The bearing material and grit in the fluid can sometimes hide slippage problems that will not become apparent until the grit that is causing the clutches to grip is removed.

Neither one cleans the fluid in the torque converter.

Here's the rundown:

TRANSMISSION FLUSH = BAD!!!

FLUID CHANGE W/ FILTER REPLACEMENT = OK

BE CAREFUL AND MAKE SURE THEY REPLACE THE FILTER AFTER THEY GET RID OF THE OLD FLUID.

Stay away from the transmission flush and find a shop that does transmission fluid exchange services. These are much better for your transmission than a standard flush. Just like any fluid exchange service they are not a neccesity but a "Preventive Maintnence" service you can have preformed on your vehicle to try and keep it running better and longer.

It's not really that hard to do, And shouldn't cost to much to have done. Change your Oil every 3000 to 5000 miles and Flush
Trans. once a year. Having all of this done in September and
October makes for a better winter. Beleave Me!
P.S.
Don't forget the Tune Up! Bill,

you should flush the transmission every 30k. the fluid does break down and it will shorten the life of the trans if you don't. it will not harm it to do it. in the past this was true but not any more.

transmission flushes are unnecessary and pretty much just line the pockets of your mechanic. I took my car to my uncle (owns a shop) and asked him, as I had a similar situation with a dealer- he told me it was a waste of money.

flushing a tranny or motor ONLY mixes up sediments in the pans and will possibly cause them to settle in parts that will cause future problems
