Eleanor Roosevelt.
She transformed the role of First Lady. She gave speeches, held press conferences, traveled the country A LOT and told the President about what she saw, had radio broadcasts and had a newspaper column ("My Day").
She became an advocate of the rights and needs of the poor, of minorities, and of the disadvantaged. In World War II, she visited England and the South Pacific to foster good will among the Allies and boost the morale of US servicemen overseas.
I think she was basically the first First Lady that saw she had some social and political influence and used i much to the chagrin of other politicians and others who didn't like that she was breaking the First Lady mold.
I will give the nod to Hillary Clinton and Nancy Reagan for also stepping up to the plate and using the First Lady position to try to do some good. But Eleanor had to overcome a lot more criticism (what comes along with being the first).

Laura Bush is very big on Literacy and teaching kids to read. You don't hear much about it because she isn't trying to make a name for herself like Hillary Clinton wanted to do. Laura is using the position the way it should be. As to the Jackie Kennedy I STRONGLY disagree. She wanted to be married to the President and didn't care that he was running around on her. How does that make her so strong? What a role model for women, just ignore that your husband is cheating on you. Yeah that's what we need to tell people. Sorry but when that is the image you are saying is favorable I think you are CRAZY. Nancy Reagan was big on Anti-Drugs and you have to give her that. Sure that Just say no was a joke(it doesn't work) but her heart was in the right place. Besides it gave us that great commerical with the poor black kid running through his neighborhood going down the back alleys and through climbing fences and all and saying about yeah these people saying just say no should try coming to our neighborhood because the drug dealers don't listen. Then there was the message about to him and all the others who have to take the long way home we are listening. Honestly I wasn't born early enough to know before Nancy Reagan. Don't know of Barbara Bush to have done anything.

My grandmother says Jackie Kennedy was by far the best First Lady to date. She says that Jackie Kennedy was a "lady" despite the daliances of her husband before his assassination. That most women in the United States, even the world, looked up to her.
I personaly do not have a choice with any so-called First ladies that have come since Kennedy, except I do NOT agree with those who chose Barbara Bush. I've seen video of her past interviews, etc. Nothing there. Just smiles, photo ops.
I don't really like Hilary but I feel she handled herself well after the Lewinsky scandal. I have to laugh everytime I think about nasty Lewinsky and the rest of Clinton's choice of Jewish women.
Laura is just Laura. All smiles. Says nothing of substance unless someone else writes it for her.
None recently have done any better for this country than any of the others.

Eleanor Roosevelt was a great humanitarian during her husband's terms in the White House.
Jimmy Carter's wife was also one of the great First Ladies.
And, of course, Dolly Madison and Jacqueline Kennedy also come to mind.
The worst first ladies: Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton, and Mary Todd-Lincoln. -RKO- 06/16/07

Eleanor Roosevelt.
She was the most remarkable woman and First Lady we ever had. Not only was she by her husband side during his 12 years in office but, inspite of intense criticism, worked very hard advocating for many things, including Civil Rights and Women's Rights. During WWII and the war years, she cochaired, with NY Mayor Fiorello, the National Committee on Civil Defense, and was heavily involved visiting Civilian and Military hospitals and spending time with the wounded...she was not adverse to picking up a mop, either.
Her contributions to our country only increased after President Roosevelt died. She was an activist all of her long life. At 6' tall, she was a woman who could not be ignored. She spoke her mind at all times, without regard to any criticism she might receive.

Everyone knows of Hillary's venture into health care 'reform.' Why anyone would bring the subject up in favor of Hillary is beyond me. She herself opened the door to the most restrictive changes made to our health care system in history and then, laid down to all the insurance companies', HMO's and attorneys demands. Those are the FACTS and I will always believe it was her intent from the start. - That is all Hillary did for our country during her reign and why people have any other perception of her is beyond me.
Eleanor Roosevelt transformed the role of First Lady, truly did champion the poor, was the first to hold press conferences, participated in international diplomacy and continued selflessly doing so up until the time of her death.

Elnor by far and away when FDR was down she keep things going and stood in for him.
Jackie Kenndy stood strong while her husband was buried. She was very classy.
Hillary did what she believe was right for her country with the universal health care but it was to lead to the undoing of the DNC majority in Congress.
The current first lady is doing well too.
