when i took the rug off, there was a sponge underneath, do i take it off to put the hard wood flooring or do I take it off

yes the carpet padding must come up.

take it out...
there is a thin material you should put down under the wood flooring. this helps with expansion and abrasion of the floor. the people you bought the flooring from should have the material you need or go to home depot and get it...secure it with staples so it doesnt move when working on the floor.

Take it out. Before you install the HW floor you need to install a layer of tar paper as a moisture barier. Also it will help stop squeeks ....... wood against wood will squeek.

That's the rug pad.
Take it off.
Your hardwood floor should be laid on a well-prepared (clean, level) surface.

You have to remove the underlay(foam) before putting your hardwood down. Before laying the hardwood you should put down a layer of tarpaper or something of that sort.
