First of all because name recognition is a big part of getting elected and someone already there has that in most cases over an opponent. Secondly an incumbent can usually point to accomplishments that have benefited the constituents thus bringing in more votes.. And the Incumbent usually has access to bringing in other legislators they work with to show why they should be returned to office and what ever an incumbent does is usually news so the news crews are there when ever they want as opposed to the challenger.

The success of their election organization is the first point. Nothing succeeds like success.
Once the organization is in place, it becomes an institution. Earning money every day is the goal. If the campaign committee can continue to raise money for it's candidate, he or she can sustain an unbeatable lead, both in publicity and campaign finances.
This is one of the best arguments for term limits. No one should have a career in the Congress.

Oh, several things.
1) People already know about them. People don't like change.
2) People already know about them: if they are "bad", people prefer to stick to them, as the alternative might be "worse".
3) They already have their support system in place; volunteers, financial aide, the whole nine yards.
4) They have already worked with others in politics and have the advantage of "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours".

Because people are afraid of change and the unknown. They feel they know what they can expect from an encumbent. The last election showed, however, that people are fed up with encumbents.

Most people vote for the Party, not the person, so an incumbant has an edge by simply having "Rep" or "Dem" after his/her name on the ballot.

The fact that are already proven in office
They are better known than the opponent...many times the opponent is unknown
Some voters are unknowledgable about candidates so they vote for the person they know....
