It is a golden barb, and after examining it, it seems to have pinky coloured scales on its gills, on both sides, and they look sore and inflamed, almost as if they are starting to peel off. Help!

hello fellow fish friend.... remove the "injured/infected" fish from tank... use 1/3 water from tank and 2/3 fresh water... go to local pet store and get (i believe its called) meta-fix.. its tea tree oil based... (antibacterial) use for two to three days.... if this does not clear up (or begin to clear up-youve gotta give it enough time to work) the substance go back to petstore and get an anti fungal.... you can mix with the tea tree oil liquid.... i've had MANY fish throughout my life and i swear by that tea tree oil.....
another poss solution -- another fish may be attacking this one (why? who knows...maybe b/c it is sick...) which is why you shoud remove it from the tank so the others dont get sick... hope this helps
if the tiny friend gets distressed in the new tank/bowl you can add a couple drops of whisky to the water (add five or six first.... then add 2 every 20 min until fish is calm)

could be a number of things. pink gills mean healthy gills. however, if it's inflamed and look sore or peel off, that's not good. gills turn reddish when they have ammonia poisoning. if thats so, water changes until ammonia is zero (0) is necessary. could also be parasites. if so, there are many medicines available. you should take a ride to your local pet shop and see what they have available.

Gold barbs often develop some reddish color on their gill plates. That's not abnormal at all really.

My goldfish had something like that, I bought drops for the pet shop but it didn't help as they were not treated early enough and they died.
Not sure if it's the same thing, but you should talk to someone at a pet store.
