The water actually needs to be 75 degrees F and the basking area needs to be 90 degrees F. 80 degrees is pushing it because in order to bask there needs to be a significant differance in the two. If the water is too warm, they won't bask which causes shell rot and other shell related problems that aren't only painful for your turtle but some can be deadly. You don't state your tank size. An angled 75 watt basking spot light can easily heat a 20 gallon long tank but if you have a tank any bigger, a heater made by Tetra-Fauna just for reptiles works well (pre-set to 78 degrees F) or a shatter and shock proof fish filter would do the trick. If using a fish filter, I'd sugest trying to "hide" it from your trutle because turtles are known to smash things. Even though they say they're shatter proof they aren't always with trutles. The shock proof is usually trustable but this is good so if something happens, your turtle won't be electricuted (which is quite possible).

I had two red ear sliders till one got too big for my tank and i gave him to a friend. Now I have one and an Algi eater. My tank set up is a 20 gal long with a filter that will filter upto a 50 gal tank. I don't use a heater. I use two lights. One for the day it is 75 watt Repti Basking Spot Lamp from Zoo Med and for the night I use 75 watt Heat Glow Infrared heat lamp from Exo Terra. This keeps the water temp at about 74 degrees F. unless the light goes out. I just take the lamp and set it on top of the mesh screen top. and i have a terrium lamp to light the tank. YOu don't want a heater in the tank because the turtles will bite it and could get electricuted. To keep the turtle from eating the algi eater get one with spikes i think it's called a plicostimious. They grow but when they get too big take it and Zamzows or most pet stores will let you trade it in for a smaller one because they always could use bigger ones. Just call before you do to make sure that they don't have a run on algi eaters. They help keep the tank cleaner. I have had mine for almost two years and my little guy is still only an inch big. Have fun and don't use a heater the lights work fine if it goes out then just let natural light in the room untill you can get the light. a few hours with out it wont kill him trust me my little guy is doing just fine.

80F is a good water temp... the reason you want the temp higher for hatchlings is to help with their immune system. I personally find 80F for water a little high, and I like to keep my North American hatchlings at 75F. Only when they show signs of illness, lethargy, I would raise the temperature.
Since it is summer, you don't need a submersible water heater right away, since most rooms are at 75F in the summer and in the southern US, I have friends who need to chill their water b/c it gets over 85F!
Anyway, Ebo Jagger are the best brand and then Tronic. You will need a plastic heater guard to go with it or else larger turtles can break it. Electrocution is rare, since it will short circuit when it is broken. I have had a water heater malfunction/broken twice and the turtles and fish were fine.
You try looking on ebay, bigalsonline.com, petsmart.com, drsfosterandsmith.com (sp?). I find web prices are often cheaper than store, but make sure you take into account the shipping costs.

No, because of the fact the different individual stated a minimum of one hundred twenty gallons. I placed mine in an outdoors pond and that they ran away so, placed a fence around the pond. fifty 5 gal won't artwork for long, so stop dropping money on gradually boost they are going to like a miles better one extra suitable.

a fish tank heater like what you get for fish.
I had several and I needed both the heat lamp and UV lamp and the heater.
1 full grown red ear slider should have at the very least a 55 gallon tank.
A heat lamp doesn't do the job.

do not just get a fish heater, turtles will eventually break most of these. you need to find an unbreakable aquarium heater. turtle are very curious and strong enough to break most things designed for fish

turtles need to be warm in and out of water. if you get a reptile lamp it will warm the whole tank and the water temperature will go up with it.
