Basically it's a marketing ploy. You see, they have sold the quarter pounder in their chain restaurants for many years now, so people know what it is and are familiar with it. So, when they decide to add an extra patty, instead of calling it a half pounder, which would appear to be a completely different sandwich to the consumer, and thus require many millions of dollars worth or marketing revenue more than just calling it a double quarter pounder, for which the average consumer is already well acquainted.

Because they use 2 quarter pound meats in a bun, hence double quarter pounder...if it were 1 half pound meat, then it would be called the half pounder.

My guess is the marketing guys felt double quarter pounder sounds bigger than half pounder.

Each patty is a quarter pound. If they called it a Half Pounder, some people might think it was just one oversize blob of meat.

It's because each patty started out at 1/4 pound. There are 2 1/4 pound patties.

It's not even that, if you read the fine print it's a quarter pound BEFORE cooking, so it wouldn't even equal a whole half pound anyway.
