Sorry, couldn't resist, given your username.
Of course, you can write about sex. While it's true that authors generally should write about "what they know", that's not ALWAYS true. I mean, men can write women characters and vice versa, authors can write about death, murder and the future without actually "experiencing" those states. Use your "second-hand" knowledge, your imagination and rest assured in the certainty that WHATEVER you write about sex has been done (or at least tried) sometime, somewhere by somebody.

You can write about anything, but your friend has a point. Maybe the experience would make your writing more believable, but I'm not saying go out there, lose your virginity, just so you can write about it in a book. Maybe ask your friend to describe some of the details, nothing personal, just the overall feeling.
By the way, I admire you for staying a virgin all this time. Hope that didn't sound weird.
Good luck with your writing!

True, that would be like me writing about England, how can I write about a subject if I've never experienced it. The first rule of writing is write what you know about !!!! A lot of people above me are saying of course you can a lot of writers write about stuff they don't know about, such as murder, that's not true they do a lot of research first to get into the mind of that person and tell you from their (the murders) perspective. Sex to me is something that you have to experience first to be able to write about it, unless your doing a survey of some kind, or if you writing a love scene and writing from your imagination, as in fiction. As for teachers they are taught how to teach and they do know their subject, they experience that in their four years of collage, and teaching is a technique that you learn as you gain experience, but you do know your subject, your just learning how to explain it.

Your friend is wrong.
Many authors write about situations they have NEVER experienced and end up doing a really good job with it! You might need to do some research for certain aspects, but you can definitely make it believable. If you are concerned about something you have written, share it with someone that you feel comfortable with and ask them if it seems to ring true.

are you comfortable talking about it? If your uncomfortable, then no.
And no, she isn't right- although experience can help.
If you don't want to lose your virginity just so you can write about it, get other people's opinions on it.
we live in a world where a 15 year old can know more about sex then a married middle-aged housewife.

You can write about sex if you dang well please to. The way you're writing the scene might not be a convincingly real as if you knew firsthand, but there's nothing stopping you from writing it. I know authors who've written very good sex scenes before they themselves even had their first kiss. Anything's possible.

While what you write may not be entirely accurate, reading and writing about sex is a good way to explore your feelings about it without actual experimentation. I think you can and should do it.

Tell you what: most people who teach in schools and colleges have no experience in that they teach. Most text book authors have no experience in doing what they write about.
So, yes, you can definitely write about sex. After all, there is no one correct answer to it.
Good luck.
