I think the army plans to keep them in the battlefield until they are worn to the nub. They are already sending back to battle those who have lost limbs, because not enough new recruits are coming from the home front.
Will they have trouble adjusting when they get home? You bet. And they'll have trouble finding jobs; everyone is. And, if they've been scarred or deformed, they will be treated as freaks by the idiots on the home front who already treat the handicapped from all backgrounds like freaks.
I have a nephew due to return (unless they extend his stay a third time); our family is going to pool our resources and try to set him up in business and provide him with security for at least the first year, because it's pretty clear he's not going to get much help from the VA, or from the people over here who claim to support the soldiers.

You are an alarmist. There is no 'wadding through blood'. The level of violence in Iraq is way lower than in Vietnam. PTSD affects all veterans, but your martial law scenario once again shows that you are not asking intelligent questions but have a very active imagination. Once again, you discredit the position you are trying to support by using absurdly silly questions.

They already do - the VA just announced a 25% increase in psychologists and psychotherapists to treat the returning soldiers because the problem was far larger than they estimated.

Many soldiers have problems when returning from war,but if that's the standard for deciding not to go war then I guess we should have let all those Europeans fend for themselves in WW I & WW II. Then again I'm actually starting to think we should have just let Hitler have Europe anyway, too bad we can't go back and change that.

Yes. Even the syndrome following the Iraq war 1 was ignored. Some act as though soldiers are suppose to have an on-off switch in their heads to click when they return home. Poor guys (and ladies).

Well, I think some of our troops will need adjustments
as they have in every other war in which the U.S. has been
involved. This is not our first war, and there has been
bloodshed in every war in history.

i'm afraid so.
a recent report (last week) indicates that nearly 40% of ALL troops seeing action in iraq are reporting some kind of mental disorder and that they are being punished for it.
the more i read, the more i realize that our army is not deserving of our young men and women...
