You set up the equation like this:
3 typists * 5 hours = 8 typists * x hours
15 = 8x
x = 1.875 hours

assuming all typists type at the same speed...
3 typists take 5 hours to type a set of letters
each typists produces 1/3 of a set of letters in five hours
in an hour, each typist produces 1/15 of a set of letters
8 typists would produce 8/15 of a set of letters in an hour
it would require another 7/8 of an hour (52.5 minutes) to produce the rest of the set of letters
total time: 1 hour, 52.5 minutes

It would take one typist 15 hours to do the letters, so it would take 8 typists 15/8 hours.

One typist would take 15 hours.
Therefore each typist would do 1/15th of the job each hour.
8 typists would do 8/15ths of the job per hour
8/15 Job = 1 hour
Job = 15/8 hour(s)
Job = 1 7/8 hours = 1 hour 52.5 minutes.
