me

Consider: I accidentally stepped on the picture of I, and I accidentally stepped on the picture of me. Only me makes sense.

I accidentally stepped on the picture of Ben and me.

The easiest way to figure this sort of thing out is to just take out the other person. So if you take out Ben, here's what you're left with:

I accidentally stepped on the picture of me.

That sounds a lot better than, "I accidentally stepped on the picture of I." Right?

Or you could think of it this way...
It was a picture of Ben and me.

Same thing applies. Take out Ben.
It was a picture of me.

That sounds better than, "It was a picture of I." Right?

So then, when should you use Ben and I?
Ben and I went to the store.

If you take out Ben, here's what you've got:

I went to the store.

Much better than, "Ben and me went to the store."
Right? Because if you take Ben out, you've got:

Me went to the store.

So...that's all you ever have to do. Take out the other person. Good luck. Hope this helps.

1. I accidentally stepped on the picture of Ben and I. - Correct.

2. (Without Ben). I accidentally stepped on the picture of ME.

"I stepped on the picture of ____? ME.

So.... this is the correct way of writing the sentence...

"I accidentally stepped on the picture of Ben and ME."

In this sentence, WITH or WITHOUT Ben, it is ALWAYS "me".

You would use "I" if it was like this...

"Ben and I both stepped on the picture." Who did? Ben did. I did. (You wouldn't say "Me did.") Therefore, "Ben and I".

Since you wouldn't say "me stepped on the picture".... you wouldn't say "Ben and me stepped on the picture."

What I usually do is take the name of the other person out.... Instead of plugging in "Ben and me" and "Ben and I".... I take Ben out, and then try "I" and "me" to figure out which one is right.

"Me". Would you say "I accidentally stepped on a picture of I"?

It should be "me", because "me" is the OBJECT. "I" should only be used as the SUBJECT of the sentence.

The best test is to take the other person out of the sentence. Would you say "I stepped on the picture of I," or "I stepped on the picture of me"? "Me", of course!!
