It works just like a small tape recorder (analog or digital). If analog, it has a micro-cassette in it. The whole thing is activated by a small relay which gets activated either when the telephone remains unanswered for a specific number of rings or the person activates a record button control. Digital voice recorders digitise the voice signal and store the file to a chip.
