Moths do most of their eating when they are caterpillars. As adults they will eat nectar from flowers. But the adults do not live that long. The adult's function is to mate and lay eggs.

Some moths are nocturnal, but others are diurnal or crepuscular. Most moths (including both adults and larvae) eat plants and/or plant material (like the ones that eat holes in your wool sweaters!). For example, gypsy moths are a major pest in the Northeast US, eating the leaves of deciduous trees. For more info, see the Wikipedia article.

Nectar from flowers, fruit, sap, animal droppings, nutrients from soil.
